Nervous to participate in a mask free flash mob, I felt relief upon seeing other 12 passenger vans as I pulled into the parking lot. I go shopping maskless all the time, but this time felt different. I was a part of something official, something organized, not just me being a lone rebel in a grocery store, armed only with the phrase, “I have a medical exemption.”
It’s amazing how ever since “Covid” began, going into the grocery store has felt more like entering a war zone than just going to get food for the family. This time felt even more so. “What do I need?” I thought as I walked in, “Well, bananas always work.” I began to enjoy my experience more and more as I saw about 5 other participating women with smiling faces around me. A “compliance enforcer” attempted to quash our demonstration, haplessly chasing each rebel down and offering face coverings. Thankfully, everyone said, “no thanks”.
As I finished grabbing my items, I thought to myself, “well this has been a delight, but nothing too big”, when something happened that made the whole experience worth it. I didn’t just hear the regular recorded “pro-mask” message over the loud speaker, but an actual person got on the speaker and said, “Just a reminder, masks are mandatory to shop in this store. If you need a mask we have them available at the front of the store. If you have a medical exemption, you should use our free, yes our FREE pickup service.” And that, my friends was the moment that I knew, there is strength in numbers and that we were actually making a difference!
The coup de grace came when a store employee exclaimed to the manager “They’re everywhere!” in defeat. And while we didn’t totally take back the “old normal” in one day, we all left with an exhilarating feeling that we had done our small part.
The flash mob described was an event organized by a local Catholic influencer. She was able to rally around 50 participants (mostly moms with kids) for this event and is currently organizing a time where more men can participate. Please contact me via telegram (T Gadfly) or email (Gadfly.t@protonmail.com), and I will get you in contact with her and help you to another organized event. While I always appreciate the reliability of some of the fiery women fighting for our freedoms, I urge you to consider if patriachal leadership in activities like this is one of your callings.
Stay free and show the world that handsome mug of yours, gents.
